2021 Tax and Compliance Deadlines

Now that we’ve put 2020 behind us with its stressful COVID-19-related economic circumstances, it’s time to prepare for 2021. We’ve put together a list of important dates for 2021 tax and compliance deadlines so you can get started with planning.

Tax Deadlines

We’ll continue updating these deadlines throughout the year.

January 15, 2021

4th-quarter 2020 estimated tax payment due – If you’re self-employed or earned other fourth-quarter income, you need to pay quarterly estimated taxes. Make sure you pay online or postmark your payment by this date.

March 15, 2021

S-corporation / partnership tax due – If you run a business that’s formed as an S-corporation or partnership, you need to pay taxes by this date.

April 1, 2021

Annual reports due – SEC-required filing of financial statements and required schedules and reports. Prepared based on broker-dealer’s fiscal year.

April 15, 2021

1st-quarter 2021 estimated tax payment due – If you’re self-employed or earned other fourth-quarter income, you need to pay quarterly estimated taxes. Make sure you pay online or postmark your 1st-quarter 2021 payment by this date. Also, get your Form 1040-ES postmarked by this date.

May 17, 2021

Individual tax returns due for tax year 2020 – This year the IRS has extended the deadline to file tax returns and make tax payments. You’ll need to e-file your individual tax return or postmark it by midnight unless you’ve applied for an extension. If you file for an extension, the Individual Tax Return Extension Form is due on this day.

Last day for 2020 IRA contribution – You have until then to save money into your retirement account for 2020 whether as a Roth IRA or contribution to a traditional IRA. Also, if you get an extension ’till October 15, 2021, and have a Keogh, SEP, or other eligible plan, you can put 2020 funds into those accounts until that date.

June 15, 2021

2nd-quarter 2021 estimated tax payment due – If you’re self-employed or earned other fourth-quarter income, you need to pay quarterly estimated taxes. Make sure you pay online or postmark your 2nd-quarter 2021 payment by this date.

September 15, 2021

3rd-quarter 2021 estimated tax payment due – If you’re self-employed or earned other fourth-quarter income, you need to pay quarterly estimated taxes. Make sure you pay online or postmark your 3rd-quarter 2021 payment by this date.

October 15, 2021

Extended individual tax returns due – If you apply for and get a filing extension for your 2020 tax return, make sure you complete it and e-file or have it postmarked by October 15, 2021.

January 15, 2022

4th-quarter 2021 estimated tax payment due – If you’re self-employed or earned other fourth-quarter income, you need to pay quarterly estimated taxes. Make sure you pay online or postmark your 4th-payment 2021 payment by this date.


Tax Refunds

If you’ll be getting a tax refund consider filing electronically so the IRS will deposit it electronically into your bank account – usually in less than 3 weeks.

Tax Extension

If you need more time to file your tax return, you can ask the IRS for an extension electronically or by mail with Form 4868, but you’ll need to calculate and pay the amount of tax you owe. The IRS grants an automatic 6-month extension.
